HEART TO HEART ON HEALTH

Baptist Cardiac & Vascular Institute of Miami today announced its partnership with the University of Heidelberg, one of the largest and most important centers for patient care, medical research and teaching in Europe, for hands-on access to the latest medical innovations.“Our Institute has set the agenda in South Florida for cardiac and vascular procedures and treatment, but a lot of medical innovations are happening outside the United States. Our affiliation with the University of Heidelberg will bring a new line of knowledge in clinical medicine and broaden our perspective about new developments in patient care,” Barry T. Katzen, M.D., founder and medical director of the Institute, said.

HEART SURGERY PROGRAM RANKED TOPS IN NATION

Baptist Hospital’s open heart surgery program ranks among the nation’s best, according to The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS), the authority when it comes to rating the quality of heart surgery. The organization has awarded the hospital its highest quality rating of three stars for outstanding results in coronary artery bypass surgery. The STS database is the largest registry of its kind in the world with nearly 1,000 participants representing an estimated 94 percent of all adult cardiac surgery centers across the U.S. Only 14 percent of those receive the maximum three-star rating.

Peripheral Vascular Lab Re-Accredited

The Peripheral Vascular Lab at Baptist Cardiac & Vascular Institute has earned re-accreditation by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories (ICAVL). The lab was accredited for all areas of testing offered by ICAVL — peripheral venous testing, peripheral arterial testing, intracranial cerebrovascular testing, extracranial cerebrovascular testing, visceral vascular testing, extracranial cerebrovascular screening, peripheral arterial screening and abdominal aortic screening.

First MRI-Safe Pacemaker Implanted in South Florida Patient

Doctors at Baptist Cardiac & Vascular Institute became the first in South Florida (and were among the first in the nation) to use a new, MRI-safe pacemaker, when they implanted the device in a Florida Keys man on Feb. 22.

Heart Repair Webcast (REPLAY)

Watch a webcast of a heart repair. The minimally invasive procedure will correct a heart defect called a PFO (patent foramen ovale) — a small hole or flap in the heart. Dr. Quesada was among the first in the nation to treat PFOs using a tiny device that is inserted through a catheter, eliminating the need for open heart surgery.

Ricardo C. Cury, M.D., Named Medical Director of Cardiac Imaging at Baptist Hospital, Baptist Cardiac & Vascular Institute

Ricardo C. Cury, M.D., has been named medical director of cardiac imaging for Baptist Hospital of Miami and Baptist Cardiac & Vascular Institute. Dr. Cury joined Baptist Hospital and the Institute two years ago as medical director of cardiac MR and CT. In his expanded position, Dr. Cury now oversees advanced cardiac imaging at those institutions.

For two years, a Baptist Hospital team evaluated procedures for treating heart failure. Now, patients experience faster diagnosis and treatment, shorter hospital stays and reduced readmission rates.

GUILHERME DABUS, M.D., JOINS BAPTIST HOSPITAL NEUROSCIENCE CENTER AND BAPTIST CARDIAC & VASCULAR INSTITUTE AS INTERVENTIONAL NEURORADIOLOGIST

    Guilherme Dabus, M.D., has joined Baptist Hospital Neuroscience Center and Baptist Cardiac & Vascular Institute as an interventional neuroradiologist. Dr. Dabus is the director of the fellowship program in interventional neuroradiology/endovascular neurosurgery.

    James Benenati, M.D., was recently named the 2010-2011 president for the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR). SIR is a national organization of nearly 4,500 doctors, scientists and allied health professionals dedicated to improving healthcare through minimally invasive treatments.
